    DVD to MP4 problem

I just ripped a couple of dance clips from a rough cut DVD of my recent show to MP4 format using "DVD ripper for Mac".

After watching the MP4 clips a couple of times, it became very obvious that most of my sharp movement appeared to be a fraction of a beat behind the music. The discrepancy remained very small and constant throughout the video (e.g. the apparent time lag did not increase). It is mostly noticeable on "pops and locks" type movements. Soft movements appear to be in time with the music. Also looking at my feet they are not stepping exactly with the beat in many places.

I was becoming very upset at the prospect that i was dancing so poorly that night. (and thinking, OMG am I one of those people who have no rhythm, and no one has ever had the heart to tell me?). Then I went back to the DVD and the timing problems were not there. My hip drops and feet were all spot on. But if someone were watching the mp4 clips, they would not think there was a technical problem, they would think I wasn't properly catching the musical accents.

Strangely, I have used DVD ripper before and have not noticed this problem.

Anyone have a solution? There are a gagillion file types I can convert to using DVD ripper; at least 5 types of mp4: mp4-mpeg, zune mp4-mpeg, mpeg-4 AVC video format, mpeg-1 movie, mpeg-2 movie, etc etc. I used the first. I have no idea what all these are; I just want something I can upload to youtube.

Maybe trying to sidestep the problem by using Handbrake could be an easy fix to give you time to investigate the problem further?

I also know that there used to be a program that would rip sound and video separately, and then one had to fiddle with aligning - I never tried that, deleted all files I had downloaded when I realized that I had to do more work than I wanted, and quickly forgot any detail. (It was for the Mac.)

O.K. I downloaded handbrake, but it appears that it will only convert whole chapters, and right now the DVD I'm trying to rip from is one big 1-hr chapter.

I've tried messing with the output profile settings in DVDripper to no avail.

What are my other choices for a Mac platform, for converting from DVD to a youtube compatible format? Should I try something other than mp4, and if so, what?

    That's sad.
I used Daniusoft DVD Ripper for Mac and never have had the problem you mentioned.
Mp4 is a good format to upload to youtube. Maybe you can try rip DVD to High definition mp4 video to obtain a higher quality maybe (I've not tested it). Here is a post on how to upload video to youtube.

well, Pavtube DVD Ripper for Mac is another better tool to convert DVD to Mp4 or other video formats without any annoying issue u had encountered. The audio-video is always in sync.
And the best youtube video format is 1280x720 16:9 MP4(h.264 video codec, aac audio codec), or 640*480 4:3 MP4(h.264 video codec, aac audio codec), or normal FLV videos.

If they are in the video_ts folder, you can open this in Handbrake and encode the required tracks as mp4. If you need to edit this further, you can open it in iMovie, Final Cut etc
DVD to MP4 Converter for Mac can fast rip/convert DVD to MP4(H.264, MPEG-4) for playback on iPod, iPhone, Apple TV, Creative Zen, Blackberry or Gphone.
