problems with excel and word not opening

One of my buddies downloaded some games to the HP and ever since then I can't open Micro office and excel..not sure if the two actions are correlated . I tried re-booting the computer, no luck. The computer came with the excel and office installed, no disk . I can restore the computer to its original factory condition but would lose all info. I have a hard drive I suppose I can back it up but am wondering if there is an easier fix to it?

it's a HP omni 100 PC if that matters..

Do you have anti-virus software, is it turned on, and have you done a scan yet?

Don't let friends download on your PC, my PSA for the evening.

You may not have enough memory and something is running in the background (Firefox is usually the culprit on my PC, especially if any of the cheezburger sites are running).

thanks! yeah i had a friend download a few games and that's when the problem started..gonna put a password on the computer

I would start with a backup of all important files. Do this anyway, even if you don't intend to reinstall your OS. Then de-install the games and restart the computer. Also check to see if you are running extraneous programs in the background and close those. You can also try google and do a search using a variety of keywords or phrases that match your problem. You may be surprised how many people have had the same problem and good suggestions, one of which may solve your problem.

Some example searches:
Can't open Excel after installing ...
Excel won't start...
Excel quit working...

Thx. My curiosity is peaked but I will visit a library to view the troublesome sites. Easier to avoid the issues on my PC that way. Bhuz is such an awesome wealth of info. Thx again.

1. Run anti-virus and anti-spyware software.
2. De-install the games.
3. Back up all files that you consider important, including email, etc.
4. Restart your computer.
5. Go into your Control Panel.
6. Go to the "system restore" area and look for a recent System Restore Point that was made BEFORE the offending software got installed. Restore your computer to that point.
7. Restart your computer.
8. Try Excel/Word and see if they work now.

Are these the full versions of Word and XP? I'm asking, because sometimes computers come with trial versions pre-installed, and after the trial period, you have to pay to continue using them.

Some other things to try:

Use System Restore to restore your computer to a date before this problem started.

Browse to find a Word or Excel file and try to open the actual file, instead of opening the program first (if that was what you were doing). I don't know why this sometimes works, but it worked for me a few years ago when I had a similar problem.
