Best Teachers in Egypt?
Who would you recommend to take dance classes from while you are in egypt? I'm looking for someone who is knowledgable, friendly and also a good instructor.
Also, Do you know what the rates are for classes there?

Sara Farouk!
She is a great teacher and is excellent for one to one tuition.
I have her email if you need it. She does have a website you can also contact her through. You can google her name.
I suppose it depends on when your talking about as she also teaches abroad qite often.

Having taken from Sara Farouk, I'll second Caroline's recommendation. Sara is great for getting you to project emotion in your dance and also for pushing you out of your comfort zone. There's always a queue of Brits for her classes when she comes over.
She has a very dry sense of humour...

Yes Sara Farouk - Also Yasmina of Cairo. I took private lessons with her in her lovely air conditioned studio when I was last there.

Re: Best Teachers in Egypt?
Interestling enough . . . I think Sara is going to be teaching a workshop in Chicago in October.
I met her this last trip to Egypt but it was purely social so I didnt see her dance/teach . . . I'll have to check her out sometime but I won't make it to Chicago that weekend as I am already going for Aida the next weekend1!! Why are things always happening at the same time or too close together!!????

Re: Best Teachers in Egypt?
I would STRONGLY recommend Diana Tarkhan. She's in Dokki, same neighborhood as Eman Zaki's shop and Raqia Hassan's house.
Her phrasing is delicious and an incredibly neat person.
FYI - She is Algerian & French & works in Cairo.

Nagwa Sultan. She danced in over 100 Egyptian films. A couple of friends of mine took classes with her last year in Cairo and were very pleased.
Edwina Nearing writes about Nagwa Sultan for the Gilded Serpent

Re: Best Teachers in Egypt?
Hi Guy's
Thanks for all the info everyone has posted
I will be working w/ Mahmoud Reda & Magda Atef while I am there & that will probably take a lot my time as I will only be there a week. I have also emailed Aida Nour to see if she has any time, I 'm hoping she will be in town...
This is so exciting!!!
I know Rocky's group will be in Cairo that week. Is there anyone else who is going to be in Cairo from the 6th thru the 12th?
Best Regards
Magz

Re: Best Teachers in Egypt?
Diana has been Raqia's student and has been influenced by Raqia, but she has her own style.
I find Diana a very good teacher and choregrapher with her own unique touch. She has done some of my choregraphies and I will definately go to her in the future as well.
Aida Nour has her style.
I'm a good teacher.
Rates differ from teacher to another. About 100 LE - 500 LE for 1 hour per person.

Re: Best Teachers in Egypt?
Agree about going to the source of the well-
BUT you will get more attention and less phone answering if you go to Diana;)
Also second Outi-
I´ve have had more bang for my bucks(especially as a beginner/intermediate student) going to teachers who have a western approach to pedagogic methods.
The "follow the bouncing butt"teaching style may work fine for advanced dancers though.
Here I assume that the student doesn´t speak arabic:
Classes that are held in fluent english(or portuguese,or french..)will also come out better than "do like this!"for three hours.

Re: Best Teachers in Egypt?
I agree with those who recommend that you try Raqia first. I had the same experience as MarieOrientale from taking lessons with Raqia some years ago. After I returned from my first set of lessons in Egypt, Arabs who saw me perform asked me what had happened to change and improve my dancing and my understanding of the music seemingly "overnight" (it was really over a month
) - the answer was "Raqia Hassan!"

Re: Best Teachers in Egypt?
While there are many excellent teachers in Cairo such as Raqia Hassan, Diana Tarkhan must be identified as one of these. I like to call her Dr. Bellydance as she focuses on the dancer's weaknesses and provides insights into how that person can improve. She has a lot of experience teaching and coaching the best including Beata and Horacio Cifuegos of Germany.

Re: Best Teachers in Egypt?
Diana is definitely on my wishlist of teachers to work with live. I have her DVD and I a) like her dancing b) like her teaching and c) can tell that she would be easy to work with as her English is very good, plus there is the option of French.

Re: Best Teachers in Egypt?
I would consider all of the recommendations..
Have yourself a dance box of Chocolates with Sara, Diana, Yasmina, Outi.. Camelia is also giving privates. What more could you want? ..g.:
People travelling to Cairo can arrange their own tailor made schedule.

Re: Best Teachers in Egypt?
Hey all,
I'll be in Egypt for the month of June and was also wondering who to study with? The names above are all on my list now, but are there any others? (besides the big names like Randa and Dina, etc.)
thanks :)
