    Going to NYC

    I am going to visit family up in the city for a week in August, but haven't been in ages, so I was wondering if anyone can suggest some teachers or ME restaurants I should look up while I am up there. I know Morocco is there, and Y. Sharif, and both have studio classes which are on my list of things to do. I am not familiar with all the dancers up there, so I am sure there are some wonderful classes worth attending even if it is just once. Any suggestions are welcome!!,r:;

Well, if you are into ATS, you could look up Mimi Fontana. She has classes down on Lafayette Street. If you are looking for Eqyptian, there is Ranya Renee. I think her classes are in various parts of the city.

I think Ranya Renee is in NYC! You can try looking at her trailers for her DVDs to see her and how great she is. I haven't personally studied with her. I just have her DVDs and she's great :)

Yousry is currently not teaching regular classes.
I would check out the following for cabaret
    Ranya Renee
    Dalia Carella
Nourhan Sharif (I'm not sure if she is currently teaching)
    Azza Amon
Jehan Kamal (great teacher, a little goddessy but a great dancer)
    Mariyah

    Re: Going to NYC

    ditto on everything Tanya said....

for teachers, also check out Anahid Sofian - great teacher, affordable classes. very old school. you can really learn a lot.

as for restaurants, check out lafayette grill on fridays for great music and live dancing.
mezzo mezzo in astoria on saturdays for music and dancing. these two are really greek heavy.

arabic restaurants: layali for really late late night partying on wed night and thurs night. dance show doesn't start until like two in the morning but they have the hottest singers in ny. it always feels like an authentic arabic night club to me (i'm not sure why....maybe all teh ungodly hookah smoke)
try al diwan on 13th and ave a. haven't been there in a while so i don't know the music/dance situation. used to be a fun time.
grisly pear also has belly dancing and music. never been but heard it's fantastic.

i hope you have a good time in nyc and feel free to contact me if you have any more questions on clubs or teachers.

Stella has www. bellydanceny.com up and running again. The event page is current.
But ditto on what others suggested. You will only have trouble deciding who you want to study with first.

    Re: Going to NYC

We have off the hook teachers here. Reread what Tanya and Zoebiada said. Also,Serena studios has classes every evening for $12! 56th and 8th. There is a hot new dancer teaching at "You Should Be Dancing" in the month of August.(Jaida) Gamila el Masri was one of the Ibis dancers back in the Golden Era. She has classes. Nourhan is back in September. I highly reccommend Jehan. She is at the Manhattan Movement Center. Tell her I sent you. Hope I helped more.
