Thread: Roman with Reyhan

I had an hour semi private class with Reyhan at her home in Istanbul just in the begining of this month.
She is such a sweetheart, she greeted us on time, offered us food at the end of the class. Her daughters are lovely like herself.
The class was all improvisational watch and learn style with repetetive combinations of basic technique of Roman. The music selection was great, her lovely impretetion of real Roman was great, she really makes you understand the feel of it.
I also took class with Ahmet Ogren in Los Angeles, he is also an amazing teacher with more stage presence and quality of breakdown of moves.
I love them both.
Of course Reyhan can show more hip work. Oh mine pelvic locks and hip lifts moving to 9/8 such an awesome earthy feeling.
I highly recommend her. She is going to be in CA I believe around April/May time.

Thanks so much for sharing these stories and photos. I took classes with Reyhan two years ago when she was one of the featured teachers at the Herdeljeizi (sp) Festival sponsored by Kostana in Maryland. Reyhan was wonderful, and I learned so much.

I also experienced the pelvic thrust/tilting marathon. Through a translator, Reyhan said that something to the effect of that one should dance Turkish Romani "like a pistachio."

I giggled, then pondered, then concluded that to me it meant capturing the earthy, crunchy pleasure of this dance--not that I should hop around like a big salty nut--which is certainly what I was doing with all that footwork at first!

I want to travel to Istanbul to study with several of the teachers you blogged about--would like to contact you privately for more details. Let me know if that would be ok.

Aloha! I haven't gotten far enough in plannning to set a date--just putting it out in the universe as it were......are you still planning to come to Atlanta in November? We could meet up and plot and plan........pm me why don't you ..g.:

I am going again next year, this time I like to take few classes with Reyhan again and maybe one or two others...there are really no good teachers in my opinion teaches old era Turkish Oriental which I have been working on it...I am working on 9/8 (not gayda) but more upbeat choreography for a friend's stage show in LA and also will work on Oriyental right after that. I really want to get my Turkish blood outthere on the belly dance scene....In Turkey now they use too much remix and pop Egyptian music...I like more classical music.

this gives me inspiration of writing my journal...I have been putting some little writings together but I really need to write the details. I perhaps will start soon.

My family does not know Hale Sultan and Sema Yildiz...how bizzare!

what is up with Asena and her not smiling???? did she look like she has to dance but not love of dance..that must be the only occupation she can do feel like...
soo sad all these touristic places cannot bring more quality dancers...and folk dancing is not the best places to watch in these restaurants, you need to go to competitions and festivals. I have seen amazing dancing when I was growing up but not in restuarants of course....wrong image of giving Turkish culture to tourists really.

I give a big thumbs up to my experience with Reyhan as well particularly as assisted by Delpha. Ahmet was also top notch and Sema great fun. They were the only three I got to study with when I was in Istanbul.

I've done 5 hours privately with Reyhan this week and I'll be doing more in the coming weeks. She's totally amazing. I absolutely love her.
