Turkey + Egypt + Nile cruise
I just spoke to Aunt Rocky earlier today, and she told me that this coming summer her tour will include 3 goodies: the Ahlan wa Sahlan festival, a trip to Turkey, and an optional Nile cruise.
I really want to go, but I don't know yet whether I can. I'd kinda been thinking that maybe 2008 would be the year that I DON'T go to Egypt, but with three great things combined in one tour it's really tempting! I've been to Turkey twice before, and want to go again. I've done the Nile cruise twice, and as I was processing my photos of dance on the walls of the Luxor and Karnak temples I found myself thinking I may need to return to those places to review what the photos look like and tweak my use of them in my "evolution of Egyptian dance" video/lecture. I've found that once I got home I had questions...
Decisions, decisions!

I have thought about going on a cruise or just a tour to Egypt sometime next year.
Since my husband just became partners in a store he worked in the last 5 years, He is not able to leave on a trip. His partner is leaving for overseas on the 7th of this month. He will not be back for 11 months. ( He's running a business over there also)
I hope this doesn't sound like a dumb question.
Does it cost more when your a single rate on a tour or on a cruise? I was told by a friend it does.

It's not a dumb question at all!
Single rooms do cost more per person than doubles. When you travel with Aunt Rocky, she'll match people up with roommates so they can get the lower price for staying in a double room. (Of course, if someone definitely WANTS a single and is happy to pay the higher price to get it, that's fine.) Every time I've traveled with Rocky, she has matched me up with a roommate that I liked, so I've been very happy with how it turned out.

Once I'm in Bulgaria Turkey is next door. I may ask rocky if I can join for that section of the tour.
course, if a bhuzzer wants to come to bulgaria for a day or two if there's room at the start or finish..... I'll probably know more by February but keep it in mind.

Normally it does on a regular cruise/tour. However, when I looked into travelling to Egypt with Katia (www.katiaboston.com), she only takes single travellers. You must be a dancer to go. I don't know if you end up having to share a room with another dancer, but I certainly wouldn't mind that.
Gap and Intrepid - two associated adventure tour companies - both do not charge a single supplement, as long as you are willing to share a room with another single traveller of the same sex.

Shira, where are the dancers?
Hi Shira!
I have been to Egypt twice and each time I scour the temples for depictions of dancers and musicians! I would be especially interested in where you located the images of dancers in Luxor and Karnak temples? It is such a special thrill as a dancer to look upon these ancient sisters carved for eternity on these walls! I would love to see them!
Tombs of the Nobels have the wonderful "3 musicians" which has been my highlight of 'tomb experiences' so far!
Cheers

Can I take it then that some of you feel there is a direct timeline of dance form the Ancient Egyptians to the modern Egyptian dance?
Much as I love the ancient monuments and am getting more and more interested in that world AND I am booked to Luxor next May, I'm not at all convinced of that!

We're pretty sure we're going to Egypt in mid February now with Peregrine Adventures. Decided not to do a dance tour for the first time to Egypt, but rather focus on the pharaonic stuff. But I hope to see some nightlife in Cairo anyway.

Ancient Egyptian Dance
[QUOTE=lizajuk;74530]Can I take it then that some of you feel there is a direct timeline of dance form the Ancient Egyptians to the modern Egyptian dance?
No not at all! Any notions of a direct timeline could only be speculative. I simply feel a special affinity for Ancient Egyptian dance because it is from Egypt;- the home of the dance form I am in love with today!
Egypt is an amazing place with an amazing energy force (or something) and I like to fantasize that whatever inspired those ancient dancers is still there inspiring us in modern times. Call me a 'romantic' I suppose : )
Cheers

It's hard to describe, but I"ll try. At the Luxor temple, it's on the wall that runs parallel to the Nile, along the street. It's on the "indoor" side of that wall, about eye level, near the north end of the temple.
These "dancers" could also be called "acrobats" or "gymnasts" - they appear to be doing handsprings. There is a guy playing a harp squatting next to them and some women playing sistrums.
Karnak temple is harder to describe. I hired my tour guide for a private tour, and he took me into the section of Karnak temple that you have to pay an extra special admission fee to enter. There is a small rectangular building in there which allegedly was built by Hatshepsut, and that had some of the images on its outside walls. It includes the same images that were at Luxor temple: handsprings, harpist, women playing sistrum, etc. He led me through the area to show me some additional ones.
