Thread: Bellydance costume shops in Dubai?

I know someone who recently moved there and I asked him if there was any bellydance costume shops, ect...and he didn't seem to know where to look?

does anyone know of anyplace over there that sells nice professional costumes? and where they are located?

Another item to look for may be cover-ups and such while one is in the gulf states: A friend posted in her blog about shopping in a high-end mall in Doha/Qatar, and also added photos - I was amazed what beautiful dresses she had photographed. Absolutely drop-dead gorgeous. I wanted all these dresses!

First of all, people who are not dancers don't know where these shops are - I had to show them to a friend of mine in Cairo who is a licensed tourist guide!

I haven't been to the UAE in a while but then there weren't any costumes shops.
They only happen to be in places where
a) Raqs Sharqi is a traditional dance (which it is not in the UAE - actually it's even officially forbidden...).
b) there are loads of Western dance-tourists asking for them. Which is for example why they don't exist in Beirut.

Consequently good costume shops can be found in Cairo and Istanbul and apparently very few in some towns on the South coast of Turkey.

I know of no shops here in Dubai that sell good prof. costumes. There is however, great fabric (along with the fab jewelry mentioned above) to be bought in Naif Souk and also a district called Satwa. In both areas you can find tailors who are great at duplicating anything that you bring them, but they don't do emroidery. If you plan on doing this while on a visit, I recommend going there early on in your trip so that you allow time for your item to be made and then perhaps fixed if it's not how you wanted it.
There are also many dancers who sell costumes and I do know of a man who sells some Lebanese professional costumes out of his home. If you want more info on getting in touch with him or with dancers who might be selling stuff here you can PM me.

The only costumes available retail here are the 'cheap and nasty' touristy sets that are sold down in the souq, they're made in India and quite honestly no self respecting dancer would be seen dead in one

Fabric here is a good buy though it'd be difficult for your friend to buy on your behalf. Skirts etc can be made here really cheaply. You can take a photo of a dress you like or a pic from a magazine to a good tailor in Satwa (which fortunately for me is near where I live) and they'll make something almost as good as the real thing. Its amazing.

For coverups, your friend could go upmarket to the shops in BurJuman where they sell the black abayas and also the colourful inside dresses that you could use as a coverup or go to any of the local shops even Carrefour where I bought a gorgeous gold Moroccan style gown for 75AED.

Dubai do has many shopping malls swarming with the stuff, However the belly costumesa are not commonly available at them, You can visit car fore a well known shopping mall to find out a costume for you as I had purchased a pair of belly shoes form there once

There are no shops for costumes - but there are seamstresses who can make balady dresses - but no one who makes costumes - no where in the Gulf - Abu Dhabi, Dubai, etc. You need Cairo for that !
