Spam from WDNY :-(
I received an email from them with the following text:
"Dear Friend, this is a newsletter announcing new DVD releases by World Dance New York.
If you feel you may have received this message by mistake, or would rather unsubscribe, please accept our apologies and follow the UNSUBSCRIBE link at the botom of the newsletter. Thank you for your time and attention, and happy dancing! "
I am very displeased - I never contacted them, or ordered from them, and sure never subscribed to any of their lists, so that's spam - and I'd sure like to know where they harvested my email address. Anyways, that's not acceptable at all - thumbs down for WDNY.

Hmmm...I got this e-mail, but I definitely made a purchase from them this summer. So it didn't bother me in the slightest.

Re: Spam from WDNY :-(
I also get frequent e-mails from them. Doesn't bother me all that much, since I've attended a couple of their workshops and I like to know what's going on in the NY scene.
But this is where e-mail marketing can sometimes do more harm than good. Personally, I hate getting invite after invite on Facebook from people who live, say, in Yugoslavia. In any e-mail marketing campaign, I feel there has to be some sense of opting in, whether you sign on to their mailing list, or they're local, or you've already established some sort of relationship. Otherwise, it just feels spammy ..c::

If I had made a purchase - absolutely, that would be an entirely different situation. But, out of the blue - not cool :-(

Re: Spam from WDNY :-(
I don't hate on Yugos! My boyfriend was stationed out there for several years and tells me it's a lovely place ..g.:
I just hate when those darned Yugos bombard my FB inbox with invites to their Yugo events, as if I can drop everything to attend their haflas! No candy or shimmies for them. j/k!
I'm beginning to think we're the ultimate threadkill duo ..l;,

Actually....I picked a country completely at random. Now I'm curious about their BD scene. I'm dancing for a Yugoslavian family this Saturday, maybe I'll ask ..l;,
I'll ask Stacy where exactly he was stationed, once I'm done wiping myself clean of the blood of a perfectly innocent thread .w.:

Re: Spam from WDNY :-(
Are you subscribed to any of the Yahoo groups in NY?
I find that often times my email address is ganked from there as Neon runs those groups.
Have you ever taken a workshop sponsored by Venus Uprising? They take your email from there as well.
Have you ever bought a ticket to one of their shows via internet, then they have your email address from that.
I get like 3 different emails from them to 3 different email addresses, and I'll admit it's annoying, but I usually get 3 different emails to 3 different email addresses from a lot of people who tend to overpromote.
I agree that it is a bit of a turn off.

Re: Spam from WDNY :-(
I have never purchased anything from them or been associated in any way. But I have also never been involved with Black Orchid Danse, or the Belly Twins, or Bellydance Super Stars or any of the other 50 or so folks who have decided to add me to their mailing list. Personally, I think it was harvested from Shira's site, since until recently that's the only place this particular addy was to be found- but I have enough decent leads from Shira's site that I wouldn't want to remove my name from there & appreciate her listing being available. If I ever tried to track all the bellydance spam I get, I think it would go over the character limit of bhuz a good 3 times over...

I feel the same way about invites to shows in America...l;, Especially when I rsvp "no" and then get reinvited and reinvited and reinvited.
When inviting people to events I use the South Korea filter so that only people in South Korea (or using the SK network) are invited. I wish all dancers would do the same.

Re: Spam from WDNY :-(
I suspect that somebody harvested emails from either Bhuz, or the Yahoo videos group. I have never attended events or bought from the WDNY group (and I sure have no intention to give them any money!); it ticks me off badly when I am spammed and then there is this whole "we're so nice, we even let you unsubscribe" nonsense.

Re: Spam from WDNY :-(
wdny is a business just like any other. they will try to advertise and promote in any way they can and i can understand that. there is a limited market out there for stuff like this and when you are in it for a profit, then you will do everything you can to get more business out of this little pool of customers. for every three people on their cold email list that get ticked off and unsubscribe, one will look through the email and possibly purchase something.
tis the digital age after all. think of it as the annoying chinese food menus that get shoved under your door every friday night.

I got it as well. I thought it might have been connected to Facebook, I didn't even think of them getting the email addresses from here.

Re: Spam from WDNY :-(
I despise getting the same invite over and over again - I had this one guy on myspace invite me to a semi-local pagan fest at least once a day for about a month, I finally de-friended him over it *sigh* I usually use location filters because I hate being invited to events that are happening thousands of miles away. I know some people like that (especially if they travel a lot) but I don't.
As for WDNY, I think they got my email address because I had registered as a user (and submitted an article) on the on-line mag: Hip Circle which I know Neon served as editor.

Re: Spam from WDNY :-(
I get those emails too, and am not interested in the products they offer. (Though, I hear they are good quality - they just don't suit my style of dance). Anyhow, the emails don't happen often, and there is an option to unsubscribe. Doesn't bother me so much.
Regarding Facebook, a lot of us have hundreds, and hundreds of "friends" so if we're hosting an event, it's soooooo much easier to just send the invite to everyone at once. I get that, and don't mind as a result. What does bother me is when strangers "friend" me for the sake of advertising. Fan pages are great for this reason. If someone has opted to subscribe to your fan page, then you know they are interested in what you are doing.
