Sophie's rockin it - Turkish Roman

I'm following Sophie's artistic development since tribe-times. She's having great input in Israel, studying music, rhythms, zilling and having Orit Maftsir as her mentor lately - isn't it, Sophie? I always liked your natural ways but you've added real performance skills - I'm really wowed by this clip even though I'm no fan of Turkish Roman, but this has everything that makes a performance thrilling - I'm not talking authenticity or anything for I wouldn't know, but genuine and skilled stage power:

This is a great video, it's been making the rounds on Facebook

What can you tell me about Sophie? Curious about how long she's been dancing and who her teachers have been.

She ist with Orit but I don't know since how long. I find she improved a lot in the last year. She was a participant of the Eilat festival already three times - correct Sophie?

    She'll sure chime in.

You know what really hit me - the "men's" dance - I've seen that style - in the rembetika clubs - a certain kind of attitude expressed by the men - everybody in town had a favorite song and they'd come by and dance -

I'm not sure exactly how this is spelled but it sounds like "mangas" - it expressed an "underworld" attitude and a blues-ey flavor, a kind of swagger and insolence.

This dance is so evocative! I can see the place - first place I worked -

Also that "coffee grinder" move - lol - she's terrific - come out Sophie!

Hi everyone! Wow, thanks for all the kind words, I really appreciate it.
I'm so excited by all the positive feedback, it's sort of overwhelmingjewelsdances, I have been dancing since 2001, but only in the past four years I started really taking the dance seriously. I have studied with many many teachers, both here in Israel and back when I lived in the States, but Nouria is right. In the past year I have been studying regularly with Orit and I feel she's the most inspiring and motivating teacher I've ever had. That includes not only her brilliant dancing, but also her personality and I feel extremely lucky that I have the privilege to have her as my mentor.

and btw. Sophie, what the skirt part is concerned body-language wise: I think you can also be very successful now as a seller on any traditional vegetable market. Nobody will dare to dispute prices with you

I just wanted to add that for those who love this style there is an instructional DVD coming up featuring one of my teachers Reyhan Tuzsuz!!! I have traveled to Istanbul to take workshops and privates with her and having her on a DVD is something all of her students have been waiting for! She is an extraordinary dancer, genuine, fun and creative and a warm and caring host.
You can order the DVD here

Hi Sophie, we don't know eachother and I hope you don't mind that I posted your video on my FB page...you channeled male energy so well in the first part that it took a full minute to dawn on me that this incredibly talented guy I was watching was you!

Great fun, attitude and heart. Thank you for putting that performance together.
