This is the footage that first sparked my Cunning Plan to find out where all the old-school ethnic dancers of San Francisco live so I can break in and steal their assuit when I am there.

Thanks for posting, I thoroughly enjoyed watching those. Mish Mish's solo is awesome, too, it looks like she is wearing assiut harem pants and using an assiut piece as a veil. Wow.

This is very timely for me as I am planning a performance this weekend and I am going to wear a similar style of costume: big circle skirt, harem pants, vest, coin bra, assiut tunic, and assiut turban or headpiece (haven't decided), lots of kuchi necklaces, etc. It's Alternative Night so I decided to use the music of Faun and dance in the style of my dance roots, vintage Jamila Salimpour style.

Today I got out my treasured pieces of antique assiut and it is always a thrill to touch it and look at it. I'm really excited to dance with it again.

Do you know, there was a bit of it about here up till a few years ago. My teacher inherited a gorgeous piece from her grandmother, another classmate found a piece at her mother's house and several friends snapped up vintage shawls at fairs (WHY DIDN'T I? SOB). I think because a lot of the NZ (and Aus!) trained outside Cairo in the wars, they sent pieces back to their wives and it was either used to drape pianos or put away for "good".

So I have several friends with vintage assuit tunics of their own making! But I can't steal them - too readily identifiable in my town...

You can always steal ahem borrow them and send them across
